Day 1: Tools You Can Use

Objectives:

  • ILLIAD -- Locate on Miner's homepage, learn how to use
  • JoVE/Current Protocols -- Find the guide, overview of why these are important
  • Citation software -- Broad overview of EndNote and RefWorks
  • Box -- Learn why you should use Box.com
  • Browzine -- Learn how to keep up on the articles you want to read

Open Researcher & Contributor ID (ORCiD):

  • Open, non-profit, community driven organization
  • Free
  • Allows user to control privacy
  • Allows user to "claim" their publications, grants etc.

 

Browzine

  • Allows the user to brows the most recent issues of a wide array of journals in an electronic format
  • iPad version provides PDF's which can be saved in a variety of programs such as reference management software, box.com and notability.
  • Web Version allows patrons to read articles online from a web browser
  • Requires an account to save favorite journals
  • Available to University of Rochester students, staff and faculty from Miner Library

Box.com Instructions

  • Logging in- If this is your first time logging in to Box, you must first initialize your Box account
    • Go to https://rochester.box.com and click continue
    • Enter your NetID username and password
    • Accept terms and conditions when prompted, you are nore logged in
  • Uploading and downloading files
  • Edit folder and file names
  • Collaborating with colleagues
    • Due to concerns regarding sensitive, privileged, or restricted information, you will be unable to share files with anyone outside of URMC from your Box account.  Please use only "...@urmc.rochester.edu" when inviting collaborators
