    Data Cleaning: A Necessary Evil

    Upcoming Events

    • Wednesday, January 28, 2015: Miner Library will host a data management plan workshop at noon in the Saunders Research Building (1.412). A Data Management Plan (DMP) is a formal plan that outlines how data, including both physical and digital, will be handled over the course of the research project and beyond. This class will cover the practical tips and essentials of data management. Please register here; space is limited.
    • January 26-March 5, 2015: The Center for Integrated Research Computing (CIRC) will hold the Winter Boot Camp, a 6 week program to help students, postdocs, research staff, and faculty learn new programming languages and sharpen their computing and data analytics skills. The classes are designed for beginners and will cover basic topics to give enough direction to move on to self-learning tutorials or other more advanced coursework.  A full schedule for each of the modules is available on the CIRC website.  Space is limited, and registration is required.
    • Friday, January 30th, 2015: Seminar on the new service offered by the Transgenic Facility at URMC, "A CRISPR Transgenic Service" from 2-3 PM in the Ryan Case Method Room, 1-9576.  The Transgenic Facility at URMC is now using CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing to generate novel mouse strains. This revolutionary technology is much easier, faster, and cheaper than traditional methods of making mutant mice. This seminar will describe the services of the Transgenic Facility and offer practical guides for using CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, as well as traditional transgenic and knockout approaches in the generation of mutant mouse strains to enhance individual research programs.  Please contact Joe Miano (joseph_miano@URMC.Rochester.edu) for more information.
    • Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015: The CTSI will host a workshop entitlted, "i2B2 Fundamentals" from 3-4 PM in the TLL Classroom (2-8513). i2b2 is an open-source software system that allows users to query clinical data to estimate the size of clinical cohorts available for specific studies, allows for the creation of “data marts” to support the requirements of particular studies, and supports an efficient mechanism to transfer clinical data directly to REDCap. Training is strongly encouraged before a new user may access the system.   Please register for this workshop through the i2B2 webiste.
    • Friday, February 6, 2015: The Department of Pediatrics will host a seminar given by Patrick Gallagher, MD, from Yale University, entitled "Genomic Approaches to Patients with Hematologic Disease" .  The seminar will be held in Room 2-6408 (K207) at 12:00 pm.
    • Tuesday, February 17th, 2015: The CTSI will host a workshop entitled, "i2B2 REDCap Integration" from 2-3:30 PM in TLL Classroom (2-8513).  i2b2 is an open-source software system that allows users to query clinical data to estimate the size of clinical cohorts available for specific studies, allows for the creation of “data marts” to support the requirements of particular studies, and supports an efficient mechanism to transfer clinical data directly to REDCap. Training is strongly encouraged before a new user may access the system.  Those interested in participating should register here.
    • Friday, March 13, 2015: Miner Library will host a workshop entitled "An Integrated View of the Genome", presented by Helene McMurray, head of Miner's Bioinformatics Consulting and Education Service.  Registration for this workshop is required, and can be completed on the Classes@Miner web page.  The workshop will be held in the Nesbit Computer Classroom (G-7545) from 10 AM to noon.
